There are five key practices that all Muslims are obligated to fulfill throughout their lifetime. These practices are referred to as pillars because they form the foundation of Muslim life. The five pillars of Islam are Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj. We have written the following 5 verses on this painting.
Shahada
أشهدُ أنْ لا إلهَ إلاَّ اللهُ وأشهدُ أنَّ محمّداً رسولُ الله
“There is no deity but God; Muhammad is the messenger of God.”
Fasting
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
“O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you—as it was for those before you—so perhaps you will become mindful of Allah.”
Quran 2:183
Hajj
إِنَّ ٱلصَّفَا وَٱلْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَآئِرِ ٱللَّهِ فَمَنْ حَجَّ ٱلْبَيْتَ أَوِ ٱعْتَمَرَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَن يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا وَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيمٌ
“Indeed, ˹the hills of Ṣafa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs the pilgrimage or minor pilgrimage, let them walk between the two hills. And whoever does good willingly, Allah is truly Appreciative, All-Knowing.”
Quran 2:158
Zakah
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ وَأَقِيمُوا ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّه
“Establish prayer, and pay alms-tax. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will certainly find its reward˺ with Allah. Surely Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.”
Quran 2:110
Prayer
وَٱسْتَعِينُوا بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلْخَـٰشِعِينَ
“And seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is a burden except for the humble”
Quran 2:45
The approach to ‘Illumination’
We have used a fresh and bright color palette for the backgrounds, taking inspiration from the cosmos. The gold foil illuminates the calligraphy and the painting overall. It not only renders a rich and vibrant calligraphy composition but also resonates with the idea of illumination – a reflective surface that aesthetically soothes the eyes and the heart.
The Illumination calligraphy series makes use of the Al-Sunbali script, which is a modern script with a dynamic character.
Language is not necessary to appreciate Art. The same is true of Islamic Art – one doesn’t need to know or understand the Arabic language to see the beauty. We hope Illumination and our Arabic other calligraphy artworks resonate with Aotearoa. See the illumination collection.
Framing: Add a floating frame to your painting and make it more valuable. Framing usually takes minimum 2 weeks.
Material: We use artist-grade canvas and painting materials. Our paintings are varnished and UV protected.
